<b>                        My Best Friend

"Feel like hittin' up the fishin' hole today?" He casually said over his bowl of noodles. "Weren't gettin many bites yesterday, maybe we should try a different spot." I replied, sipping my green tea. "I heard of an old man down in the Islets who sells some good bait." He smiled, and continued.. "Wouldn't it be something if we caught that 'Magical fish' everyone always talks about?". He always dreamed of catching that Magical fish to keep as a trophy, but it always eluded him. The fish was always one step ahead of us, too fast, or perhaps too smart, it seemed the only fish uncatchable.

We headed down to the stream by the old abandoned monestary, birds chirped loudly in the trees as if to laugh at us on our fool's errend. "I always heard he lived in the lake." I said, my cohort seemingly ignoring my statement. "I wonder how much he weighs!" He seemed undetered by my defeated mood left over from yesterday. Always the optimist he trudged on down the path, fishing pole in hand. "This bait sure is bizarre" I thought to myself. "It smells like..." He spoke finishing my thought, "Freshly peeled ripe mango!" his words shocked me for a moment. "Yes, thats exactly what this bait smells like! How did you know what..." I trailed off wondering if I was losing my mind. "No, look there! On that rock, a freshly peeled mango!" Just as he spoke a man walked out from behind the rock, holding a knife in one hand. "Don't be alarmed!" He said with a grin. As we approached we saw a fire, and most of a freshly slain deer. "I was just making myself something to eat, there will be plenty left over if you'd both like some." The stranger said. I could hear my friend's stomach growl, or perhaps mine... We sat with the stranger who told us about a small pond just beyond a field, surrounded by mango trees. After our meal we shared some of our Herb pipes, thanked him for his hospitality, and made our way toward the pond.

The pond was indeed quite a walk as he said, hanging moss blew in the breeze, swinging from the drooping branches of the mango trees, the pond was quite a bit larger than we imagined. "Look over there! a small wooden boat!" My friend said pointing on the shore of the pond not far from where we stood. After testing the boat we set out into the pond, using 2 sturdy pieces of bark as paddles we made our way to the middle of the pond. "I wonder what this pond has for fish in it." I said. "Probably Mud fish, Bass, and maybe some Trout." He was right, for the next 2 hours we caught quite a few good size fish. It was getting late in the day and time to head back when his line began to pull very hard. Something big was on the other end, the boat began to follow what ever it was, dragging us all around the pond.

"Quick do something!" he shouted nervously. I grabbed a dagger from my bag, ready for whatever horrible monster that was on the other end of his line. As it tired out and he reeled it in we saw this great big figure emerge from the bottom of the pond, it was bigger than any big sea turtle I had ever seen, as big as a horse almost! "Be ready to give it a good stab in the head" he said wearily. As is surfaced it began to speak. "If you let me go I'll give you something shiney..." The fish spoke like a man, it had a face almost like a man's face. We sat there in the boat shocked at what we were seeing. "Wh-what would that be?" my friend was shaken, he looked like he was ready to run across the water to shore. "A shiney firey blade, one that will never dull or burn out." the fish spoke clearly in his deep voice. "Shu-shure... thing...." My friend was not about to argue with a giant talking fish, so he took the offer. The fish spat out a Flameblade into the boat, and snapped the line swimming away. We sat silently for what seemed like hours. Shocked at what we had seen. "So, what now?" He said quietly. "We take up a new hobby." I said.
